30+ Legit ways to make money from home, (other than forex or mlm opportunities)

Let’s face it South Africa’s job market is really tough.

When I suddenly became a single unemployed mom. Most jobs I was offered were completely unsuitable for a single mom or the pay was not worth writing home for.

I had to consider how much a job outside of the home actually cost me?

Real talk. It costs everyone to go to work. Sometimes employers don’t factor that in when offering a salary.

As I have no family close by and the likelihood of me being home by five in slim to none. I would need to pay for aftercare, school transport, and a nanny. Then I would need to factor in travel costs, food, and clothing.

According to Business Insider, South Africans spend more now on fuel than on a new car.  Shocking!

Whether you need money to pay off debt or to contribute to your income, there are numerous ways you could do that. Here on Shell Shocked Mummy, I share all the ways I have discovered that South African moms can make money, most from home.

Extra income could completely change the game for your lifestyle. Heck, it is changing mine more and more each day.

Not only am I making more extra money, but I am also learning ways to save more so that I can completely change my financial health status. Hopefully, this list will inspire you. Some of these will be more suitable for extra money and not your main income. You should consider having more than one stream of income in order to make 6 figures.

I am adamant that I will only write well researched content not influenced by or paid for by an advertiser. The decision will always remain yours on whether you buy anything.

1 | Start a blog

I have added this first because my original Shell Shocked Mummy blog used to make up to 12k a month. It takes some time but it honestly the best job I have ever had. The only reason I stopped was that my blog was heavily focused on my daughters’ life. I became increasingly uncomfortable sharing so many sensitive details of her life (and mine) and I would hate for her to ever think that I exploited her to make a buck. So I stopped.

It dawned on me how many other South African moms, with no experience blogging, could use my knowledge on how to make money from blogging and all the other ways to make money without even leaving your couch.

How much can you earn?

Unlimited income potential. However, do not expect to become a professional high earning blogger without effort and time.

If you are interested check out my free step by step blogging series. It cost me less than R100 to start this very blog.

2 | Earn Dollars for taking surveys

I was sceptical about surveys and thought it was a total scam. Short answer: it’s not. I earned $18 (Just over R250) while watching TV in between planning my blog launch.

It did take me a LONG time finding surveys that work for South Africans so I am sure I could have easily doubled that. Plus I am a busy mom with a job and a blog.

Take a look at some paid survey websites listed below.

It is completely FREE to join. Forewarning: If they ask you to pay then it’s very likely a SCAM.

Here is a list of survey companies that I have found I will be doing an in-depth review in the near future.

SwagBucksMindSwarms, GlobalTestMarket, Prize Rebel, SurveySavvy, CashCrateOpinion Outpost, IPsos i-Say, FusionCash, Vindale, iPoll, Toluna South Africa, Panel Station, E-Research Global, Brand Institute, Cinchbucks, Life Points, PaidView points.

Earning in dollars is awesome however it is time-consuming finding which surveys you qualify for. You can also make money from referrals to other people.

Side Note: I will be interviewing a South African who makes over $500 per month just answering surveys soon.

3 | Become a Transcriber

I have never transcribed a day in my life and, I made $67 in one month. I am sure with some practice I will earn much more.

What is transcribing?

Transcription involves listening to a recording of something and typing the contents up into a document, which is then returned to the client, giving them a written record of what’s on the recording. Typically, this will be an interview – which might be something a journalist has undertaken with someone they’re writing about, or part of a study, where a researcher has interviewed subjects and needs to record their responses.

I suggest taking this FREE mini-course first and if you are serious about it, I would. Because I was new to it and it took me some time to get to grips with it. I also spend a large portion of my time researching every work from home opportunity.

All you need is a grasp of English, Good noise-cancelling headphones and you are good to go. You can also market yourself of sites like UpWork or Fivver or apply to South African companies that hire transcribers from home.

4 | At home Data Capturing

The best way I have found is signing up to Freelancer.co.za or people per hour.

Earning in dollars sounds amazing but the competition is also really high.

There are some local sites like

No Sweat – NoSweat is a straightforward platform regarding payments and hourly rates. You’ll know what kind of earnings you can expect from day one. They also help you with Sars payments which can save you future headaches.

Freelance Capetown. – Using this platform is not free. It will cost R299 once off for a 6-month subscription. A 12-month subscription costs R499 once-off, which is just over R41 per month. I think that is reasonable and may increase your chance of finding work with their large database of clients.

Niche Market – Technically a marketplace but they do have a freelancer section.

All these sites do way more than data capturing basically almost any skill can be marketed.

5 | Get paid for your opinion

Yep! That’s right you can make extra money from testing other peoples websites.

How Does it Work?

You sign up to a website like Usertesting and while you click around your screen records your voice as you share your thoughts.

6 | Brand Your Car

You can brand your car for around R1000 – R4000pm branding your car.
Companies will pay regular people to have their cars branded for campaigns they are running. You sign up with companies like Brand Your Car (BYC) and they will come to you to brand your car. Once the campaign comes to an end, our specialists will remove the advertisement for you, at no cost. This will restore your vehicle to its original state.

You can choose whether to have your car fully wrapped or Partial – A vinyl sticker covering only part of the vehicle, such as the boot and rear window, while the rest of the vehicle remains untouched.

Besides this extra benefit of this is that the materials used to wrap your car protects against stone chips, UV damage, road grime and minor abrasions, which can potentially extend the lifespan of your vehicle.

Can act as a deterrent against hijackings, smash and grabs, and vehicle theft. Some insurance companies will even discount their premiums on branded vehicles.

Drive around as you normally would and get paid.
Pretty cool way to make extra cash I would say.

7 | Advertise on your Property aka Wall Media

All you need is a wall that is easily visible from the street and, you have a billboard! At first, you could divide the space and use one of the ad spaces to advertise for yourself or a friend and have one of the blocks read something along the lines of “Rent this ad space!”

Be sure to check if your local municipality rules. Check out CommuniKasi Media

8 | T-Shirt Advertising

If you are a runner or go to big social events you could offer your T-shirt wearing advertising service to small businesses. They supply the T-shirt and you advertise for a fee.

Good places are also shopping malls, races, flea markets, festivals, concerts, sporting events, big races. Share your images of yourself at those places wearing the T-shirt.

9 | Use your Car for Cash

Not using your car weekend or during the week? Perhaps you have a second car? Rent it out.

List your car and start putting your car to work.

Register to create an account and then click on “List your car”. Their calculator will suggest a daily rate that you should rent your car out for.

10 | Sell online

A garage sale might not be your style, or maybe you only have a few really nice things you want to sell. If you have a passion for crafting or designing. Esty or Bid or Buy is the way to go.

I prefer Bid or buy as they are local, they verify sellers so buyers have confidence. I would suggest marketing your Bid or Buy store on Facebook MarketPlace and Groups

Sign up and have a look at how they operate and what others are selling.

11 | Become a Mystery Shopper

Yes, you can actually get paid to shop at stores and eat at restaurants. I think this is pretty fun too.

Here are some companies that do that

ExperienceWorx , BMI Research; Clear Strategy Company: React

Download the secret agent app and find jobs today.

12 | Participate in a Clinical Trial

I did a smoking clinical trial in the past when I was a smoker and earned a couple of thousand rands over the few months.

You can join one at Center watch

All you do is check out the available studies and apply

13 | Be an Extra in a Movie or TV show

If there’s a movie or TV show that is being filmed near you, you could always find ways to make extra money by being an extra in it. You won’t have to do much and it could be a lot of fun, especially if you are able to meet someone famous!

14 | Become an Egg Donor.

You can make R7000 just for one viable egg, helping someone into motherhood.

You need to be under 32 years of age.  Check out the agencies and banks if that is something that would interest you.

Nurture, Aevitas, New Life; Gift of Life;  Veda, Baby 2 Mom

At this company, they will even pay for your trip to Cape Town.

15 | Examine search engines

You can evaluate search engines by conducting researches on predefined queries, analyzing them, and providing feedback for search engine results by their usage and relevance.

Companies like Google, Appen and Lionbridge are always looking for work from home examiners.

16 | Write for others.

Are you a stay at home mom with a writing gift and can spot grammar a mile off?

I would suggest starting a blog as part of your resume.  My friend has made this a full-time career now and writes for a number of brands and websites.

Huge and trustworthy sites like Upwork have thousands of employers who want to hire for all kinds of tasks where you can write or edit about anything from technology to business articles. Get paid for every single article. Get a great reputation and you can turn this into a full-time job.

17 | Creative Freelancing

Leverage any skills you may have like web design, graphic or even programming.

I do this and freelance as a Canva designer, non-coding web designer and blog consultant.

I am in the process of designing reasonably priced templates like resumes, media kits and social media templates and I also help bloggers get set up their themes for as little as R899. You can check out my services here.

You can also sign up with websites like Upwork, PeoplePerHour, Freelancer, Demand Media

18 | Become a Virtual Assistant

Use your organisational skills and become an assistant right from the comfort of your home.

Tasks could be anything from typing, making appointments, research etc, You can join companies that will market your skills to their clients or you can start a blog for virtual assistant business and market your services to small businesses directly.

Check out the South African Virtual Assistance Association for other members and their own websites for inspiration.

UpWork and Zirtual are international companies that hire South Africans. Local Companies are VA Connect and Admin Assist, Outsourcery

Recruit my mom is another South African agency that looks for part-time and half-day work for moms

19 | Change your Search engine

Some search engines pay you to use their search engines. How awesome is that?

Why would they pay you?

Well, if you use another search engine with a rewards program, then the alternate search engine gets website traffic, and this equates to income from its advertisers. So they can pass some of this back to you.

I changed mine to Swagbucks and plan to cash out at the end of the year. I am expecting about $150 (Approximately R2100) That will go directly into my savings account.

You’ll receive a free $5 bonus just for signing up through my link!

20 | Become an Affiliate

South Africans save billions with their rewards programs but some of them will give you straight-up cashback.

Try out Snap and Scan App for incredible deals as well as cashback. Other companies that do this are Clicks, Discovery Vitality, Pick n Pay.

21 | Get Cashback

Many companies will pay you to promote their products. You do not even need to have a huge following. Example Zando will pay you 5% to promote products that you already love anyway via your pages.

This is one of the ways that I use as well. If I genuinely love something then I will share it and get a commission. This way will take a bit longer to get to 6 figures if you do not have a large network. This could be one stream of income but not your only one.

22 | Recycle

Not only does this help the environment you can earn money from it. Ask friends and family to save items for you and once a week go and collect and then deliver them to a recycling centre for cash.

How much can you earn: Varies.

22 | Teach from Home

If you have a bachelors degree you will have many opportunities to teach English from home.

However you can take a TEFL course for as little as R500 and you can become a teacher and earn as much R20 000 per month, right from home.

24 | Start a Side Business (Non MLM)

Become an online personal stylist or write down a list of things you are good at and brainstorm how you can monetize those skills. It will take effort, but there are many different routes you can go.

Network or direct marketing is not owning your business. I too drank the cool-aid once. The person trying to get you to join will try to convince you of this. It’s not illegal but there is a lot of dogma attached to the business model. For good reason.

I joined Herbalife and from personal experience, do not be lulled into any false sense of “work in your spare time” it takes around the clock commitment plus you have to be able to handle a lot of criticism and rejection. Here’s why you should start another business instead of Network Marketing.

  • You have over what products you sell in your business
  • You do not have to recruit people to join your business using predatory behaviour
  • You never have to pretend how easy or how much you are enjoying it to anyone.
  • You never have to give motivational speeches disguised as training.
  • You control how much you charge.
  • You control how you market your business.

25 | AirBnB

Bed and breakfast or AirBnB

You already have a place to live in. If you live near a college campus with visiting parents or near music or sports venues, consider starting a little bed and breakfast.

If that seems too hard, check out sites like Airbnb, which help you rent safely and ensure you get paid.

26 | Help Others Get Hired.

Companies charge between R500 – R3000 for a professional CV written for them. You can do that too and help others land their dream job.

I charge from R250 for a professional CV including a motivational letter and have helped 4 people get hired already. I have even helped one client completely overhaul their LinkedIn Profile.

You can check out my CV service here.

27 | Be an at Home Editor

If you are the grammar police and great at catching spelling errors then this is a great option for you. Market yourself to your favourite bloggers and make some extra cash.

28 | Become a Social Media Manager

If you have social media skills then this is a great option that you can turn into a career. You need to be highly organized and able to create strategies for small businesses and manage their communities

99 Dollar Social is a company that you can sign up for that will send clients your way. You will need to do a English test and create a few mock posts.

29 | Moderate Forums

Some forums or Facebook Groups pay you to moderate them. Why not ask your groups if they are hiring?

30 | Apps that Pay

Become a Click Worker or Street Bee and get paid to do small tasks

31 | Get Paid to Review Call Centre Calls

Listen to companies recorded phone calls, answer a simple question with the click of a button, and earn real money. Humanatic is one way to do this.

32 | Shorten Links for Cash

When I started searching for ways to make money online I was gobsmacked that I could earn money from shortening links. Shocked but also chuffed.

You don’t even need a website to earn money from it. Although having one increases your potential.

What is link or URL  shortening? When you share a link from any website it’s is usually a very long link or Url. Example

See how long that link is? Now you can shorten it by going to websites and shorten it Example http://uiz.io/lioH

Especially useful when posting on social media.

How it works

Whatever links you want to share go to a link shortening website site like this and paste in the long link and it will magically shorten it for you and you share that shortened link.

The shortened URLs can be posted on your blog or website. You can also post the shortened URLs on forums as well as social networking platforms such as Facebook, Twitter, Google+ or anywhere. Whenever a visitor clicks on your shortened URL, some money will be credited to your URL Shortener Account.

You can earn from every single click.

If you are consistently sharing links online in forums or on social media or you are a blogger with a decent amount of traffic. This can earn you a pretty penny.

I suggest Adshrinkit because they pay the most for South Africans and have been in the game a very long time and sometimes the newer companies go bust.

33 | Become a part time Uber Driver

This is not technically from home however it is flexible and if you have school-going children that could be your chance to do some driving.

I have asked 3 uber drivers in South Africa how much they make and they all said over 20 000 per month. A piece of that pie wouldn’t be too bad.

Giving rides to strangers not your thing? No problem! You can still earn with Uber by simply doing deliveries. You set your own schedule, and earn when you want to. You don’t even necessarily need a car

Final Thoughts

I do my best to research every company that I write about but please do your own due diligence before deciding which way to go. Once you have decided which route you want to go with, have a strategy on how you can maximize your earnings. Do give it time to become really skilled at any option.

A rule of thumb is if you have to pay to work for them, it is likely a scam.
